How many mock deer scrapes should you have on your property?

Areas with a deer scrape – a low-hanging tree branch that offers a place for deer to get a nice scratch – have long been known as attractive spots for bucks to visit.

So you might think that the more mock deer scrapes you create on your recreational property, the better, right? Not so fast.

As Jeff Sturgis explains in a video on his Whitetail Habitat Solutions blog, it’s important to be thoughtful on where you put mock deer scrapes. And more is not necessarily more effective.

“Just like deer waterholes, the more (deer scrapes) that you have, the lower the value of each one, to the point of insignificance,” Sturgis writes in the video intro. “How many mock scrapes should you have on your land? Just enough!”
